About the Artist

Cindy Free is a figurative sculptor creating timeless works that capture life and breath in moments of grace, emotion, and beauty. Rooted in romantic realism, her sculptures blend exquisite detail with the fluidity of movement, preserving fleeting expressions in enduring form. With a foundation in ballet, she understands how to utilize the body’s silent language to convey story, express emotion, and provoke profound thought. Her sculptures embody this awareness, balancing motion and stillness with breath-like suspension. Her deep understanding of anatomy and dance technique allows her to depict the human form with precision, capturing both musculature and movement. Even when not portraying dancers, her figures carry a refined grace that enhances their expressive power and timeless appeal.

Formerly the founding Artistic and Executive Director of Birmingham Ballet, Cindy transitioned to sculpture to translate the ephemeral beauty of dance into bronze and other durable materials. Using the lost wax method for her bronze creations, she crafts figures that feel poised to move – as though they are about to take a breath. Her work has been exhibited in juried shows, represented by Beverly McNeil Gallery, and featured in private collections and public exhibitions. She teaches at UAB’s ArtPlay and participates in community arts initiatives, reinforcing her commitment to making sculpture accessible.

Cindy’s journey as a sculptor began on the sands of Gulf Shores, where she sculpted mermaids in the sand to the delight of vacationers and locals who walk the shore to visit her creations in progress. Her passion for creating works in bronze grew out of her desire to create lasting works that would not wash away with the tide or disappear when the lights went out.

Her work is increasingly recognized and sought after. Most of her bronze sculptures are cast in limited editions of 1 – 10 pieces. She accepts commissions for private collections, limited issues, and public art installations.

Cindy Free’s work is represented by the Beverly McNeil Gallery, located at 605 28th Street South, Birmingham, Alabama 35233.
